Come and See

I find that I am incredibly gifted at becoming negative or thinking negatively about an upcoming event, conversation, or whatever else is on my schedule.

It is easy for us to sink into being critical or cynical about life and different situations.

This mentality even begins to seep into our faith and view of God.

There is an interesting story in the gospel of John where one of the first apostles is initially negative towards the idea of Jesus.

Philip begins to follow Jesus and this quickly leads to him having a conversation with a man named Nathanael. Philip is beyond excited because he has discovered that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah and Savior. So he invites Nathanael to follow Jesus too.

But Nathanael is not impressed.

'Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" John 1:46

Essentially, are you serious? Are you really going to waste my time with that guy? What good can come from that town?

How often we respond the same way when someone brings up God, church, prayer, Bible study, or having conversations about Jesus with others.

What good could possibly come from believing in God?

What good could possibly come from going to church today?

What good will that prayer do?

What good will it do me to read the Bible?

What good could come out of having that conversation with them?

And on and on we could go with so many things in life. Can anything good come out of...

But I love Philip's kind response. He simply invites Nathanael again.

Philip said to him, "Come and see." ' John 1:46

So the next time you or someone you know are scoffing; just remember Philip's words:

Come and see...what God can do for you

Come and see...how God answers prayers

Come and see...what Word God has for your life

Come and see...what Jesus can do for your relationship

Come and see
